Blow Drying Hair Straight - Blow Drying Hair Straight takes a lot of practice and can be quite difficult, especially if your hair is very curly or frizzy to start off with. However, with patience and practice and the correct choice of styling products, you can blow dry your hair straight.
Tools of the trade
You will need:
- A hair dryer with a directional nozzle
- A large round or flat hair brush, preferably specifically designed for blow drying
- Clips to divide your hair into sections - you can use professional hairdressers' clips or hair claws and clamps.
- Styling products - use a styling mousse or other products specifically designed for straightening hair. Products serve three purposes - they help to straighten your hair, protect it from heat damage and repel moisture to maintain your style for as long as possible. You may need to use more than one product!
Here is a step by step guide to blow drying your hair straight:
- Shampoo and condition your hair, making sure that you use a moisturising conditioner if your hair is dry or frizzy.
- Comb your hair with a wide toothed comb. Some products need to be applied whilst the hair is wet, others when it is towel dry so check the instructions on your product(s).
- Remove excess water with a towel, then allow your hair to dry by combing your fingers through it, until it is about 80% dry.
- Apply some protective oil and some straightening balm to your hair.
- Divide the hair into four sections, two at the front of the head and two at the back. Clip the sections of her onto the top of your head.
- Finish blow drying one section of hair before going onto the next section - hair that is not completely dry may curl again.
- When blow drying the hair, use the brush to pull the hair away from the roots and direct the air from the hairdryer down the hair shaft. Keep the tension on the hair, stretching it out and holding it straight.
- Try to distribute the heat from the hair dryer evenly down the shaft, to promote even drying and reduce the risk of heat damage to the hair.
- Work down the hair shaft to the ends. To ensure the ends are straight, put the brush under the ends and let the hair lie flat against the brush whilst blow drying.
- You may want to apply a small amount of shine spray, gloss or oil on your hair after blowdrying to smooth down the hair and repel moisture.
Do's and Don'ts
- Don't point the hair dryer directly at the scalp.
- Don't point the hair dryer up the hair shaft - this can lift the scales on the hair shaft and make the hair look less shiny.
- Do dry the back sections of the hair first.
- Do dry the underneath of the hair first and the top sections last.
- Do use products to protect your hair.
- Do finish by blow drying your hair with cold hair to "lock" the style into place.
